MGR was flown to America on November 6, 1984, on a chartered Air India flight and was admitted to the Downstate Medical Centre in Brooklyn, New York. At the time of admission, he was not fully conscious after suffering a stroke. Later, he underwent a kidney transplant surgery at the hospital.
